Imagine walking across frozen sheer of ice with mountains enveloped by snow on one side, and a stream slowly freezing or melting right on the other. While that seems fascinating, look ahead and around; to witness surreal beauty for as far as your sight reaches. This, multiplies a hundred-fold, from imagination to reality on the Chadar-Frozen trek. One of the most extreme treks in the country this trek, over the frozen Zanskar River, connects villages in the Zanskar valley with chilling landscape (on the roads to Leh). The best time for the trek is during January and February, when the ice sheer is the thickest and most stable, but it’s still a slippery exercise. The Zanskar River is fast flowing and rising temperature over the past few years have made sections of the trek treacherous. To add to the challenge, temperature range from -5°C in the day down to -35°C at night. The biggest reason to trek Chadar now is that it will be continued to history with the next decade owing to the rapid global warming which will lead to the thinning of ice, making this trail impossible to walk on.
